Oettinger voices threat of EU collapse

European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Guenther Oettinger, said that the European Union could fall apart.

According to him, the EU has learnt to overcome crises. "But the number of unstable or populist governments is rising. That makes me worried. I see for the first time a real danger that the EU could collapse," TASS cited him as saying.

He added that there is a need for strict conditions for admission. Oettinger pointed out that Turkey joining the EU will not happen in this decade, maybe it will not happen in the next decade either. "However, we must maintain this prospect," the Commissioner concluded.
