Orkhan Mammadov: concept of my installation at Moscow Biennale - preserving aesthetics of Azerbaijan

The 8th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art opened its doors for visitors. This year, it presents two Azerbaijani artists - Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva and installation artist Orkhan Mammadov, their art objects are exhibited at the Tretyakov Gallery. Orkhan Mammadov told Vestnik Kavkaza about the meanings of his work and Leyla Aliyeva's work 'Eternity'.

"The concept of my installation is preserving the aesthetics of Azerbaijan. In order to make it, I collected all Azerbaijani patterns from different Azerbaijani museums and schools, all national, traditional ornaments and different carpet designs, and then wrote a code that analyzes these patterns and creates new ones based on them," he said in the first place.

"That is, those patterns that you see did not exist before. They are created by an algorithm developed by me. First we trained artificial intelligence in ornaments, then it began to create endless new ornaments. Now it thinks and creates ornaments all the time," Orhan Mammadov said.

The artist took part in the creation of Leyla Aliyeva's 'Eternity' video art. "I did the implementation of this installation. Leyla Aliyeva painted a picture, and I animated it, brought it to life in all the details. This installation is very deep, I think it is as deep as Leyla Aliyeva's personality. Each illustration is part of her life," he emphasized.

"In Leyla Aliyeva’s work, a person is infinity. The human form in which we live is temporary, and our mind is infinite. We put this idea into the concept: her picture represents her mind. Then we made a mirror room that gives visitors an illusion of infinite space, without any physical boundaries. It has a glass as a physical object, but number of reflections is endless there," Orkhan Mammadov said.

The installations of the Azerbaijani participants at the Biennale were presented on Tuesday at the official opening ceremony of the Tretyakov Gallery's exhibition site.
