PM says central bank’s decision will hinder economic growth after 6 months

The decision of the National Bank will slow economic growth after about six months, Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said while commenting on the decision of the National Bank, which increased its key policy rate by 1 percentage point to 8.5%.

The Prime Minister said the government aims to ensure “maximal rate of economic growth, new jobs and financial stability.”

“The main purpose of the National Bank is to target inflation. The National Bank carries out certain measures within its mandate. Of course, it is real and it is the logic of macroeconomics that this step will slow economic growth after about six months. However, inflation is also the challenge facing our economy, and the National Bank has to act within its mandate,” PM Gakharia said, InterPressNews reports.

The Georgian National Bank announced today that it increased its key policy rate by 1 point to 8,5 % on Wednesday.
