Pope and Erdogan call to protect status of Jerusalem

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed the status of Jerusalem with Pope Francis in Vatican today.

A Vatican statement said the talks included "the status of Jerusalem, highlighting the need to promote peace and stability in the region through dialogue and negotiation, with respect for human rights and international law," Reuters reported.

Both Erdogan and Pope Francis are opposed to US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, which many US allies say could doom Middle East peace efforts.
