Protesting boxer sentenced to death in Iran

Iranian professional boxer Mohammad Javad Wafaei-Sani has been sentenced to death by hanging. This is stated in a message posted on the page of the Iranian human rights organization Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) on Twitter.

CHRI explained that the court found the 26-year-old athlete guilty of arson and destruction of government buildings during violently suppressed protests in 2019, organized due to rising fuel prices.

As noted by the boxer's lawyer Babak Paknia, he intends to appeal against the verdict in the country's Supreme Court.

Social media users are calling on the country's leadership to save the athlete's life, and the hashtag #SaveMohammadJavad has appeared on Twitter, RBC reports.

Let us remind you that Wafaei-Sani was detained in February 2020, he is currently in custody.
