Putin and Assad holds meeting in Sochi

Russian President Vladimir Putin held a meeting with his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad, who made a working visit to Russia, in Sochi on November 20, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.

The two leaders agree that military operation in Syria is coming to an end and emphasized the need to launch political processes in the country.

The Russian leader noted that the problem of terrorism is universal, adding that "a lot should be done to achieve a complete victory over terrorism". He stated that their military operation in Syria is really coming to an end. Putin noted that the main thing now is to move to political processes. "I am pleased to see your readiness to work with everyone willing to establish peace and find solutions," he told Assad.

At the meeting, Putin and Assad have discussed the major principles of the political process in Syria and preparations for a congress of the Syrian people.

Putin recalled that on November 22, he plans to meet with the presidents of Turkey and Iran in Sochi. "The main question concerns the political process that will be launched after terrorists are defeated, and is expected to help find a long-term solution to the Syrian crisis," Putin pointed out.

"Over this time, huge successes have been achieved, both on the battlefield an on the political level. Many areas in Syria have been liberated from terrorists, and civilians who were forced to leave those areas have been able to return," Assad stressed.

"We must admit that the [military] operation made it possible to advance the process of political settlement in Syria," he added. "Russia has facilitated the process in many ways, ensuring respect for the UN Charter, the sovereignty and independence of the state," the Syrian leader said.

Assad said that he expects Russia to assist Syria in preventing external players from meddling in the political process and also support the process launched by the Syrian people. "We do not want to look back. We welcome all who are interested in a political settlement and are ready to build dialogue with them," the Syrian president concluded.
