Qarabag wins UEFA Champions League main draw match

Azerbaijan's Qarabag football club has defeated Benfica in Lisbon during the main stage of the UEFA Champions League.

The match, which took place at the "Da Luz" stadium on September 16, ended with the victory of the Azerbaijani team.

Enzo Barrenechea (6th minute) and Vangelis Pavlidis (18) scored for Benfica. Qarabag's goals were scored by Leandro Andrade (30), Camilo Duran (48) and Aleksey Kashchuk (86).

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev congratulated Qarabağ FC on the first victory in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

"On the occasion of winning their first victory in the league phase of the continent’s most prestigious club tournament – the Champions League, I sincerely congratulate Aghdam’s Qarabağ football club. This is a historic triumph for Azerbaijani football and Azerbaijani sports. Qarabağ’s brilliant comeback victory in the away match against Benfica, one of Europe’s most established clubs, demonstrates its indomitable spirit and determination to fight,"  Ilham Aliyev said.

According to the head of state, this victory has brought great joy to the people of Azerbaijan.

"Every Azerbaijani is proud of Qarabağ creating miracles in Europe. I wish our club every success and new victories in the next matches of the Champions League," Ilham Aliyev said.
