A peace settlement of the conflict in Syria is possible only as a result of a compromise between Russia and the United States, the former Prime Minister of Italy and former European Commission President Romano Prodi said in an interview for Messaggero.
"The only way is a compromise between the two superpowers, in which it will be possible to work together to fight terrorism and the Caliphate, as well as prepare reasonable terms for changing power from Assad,’’ Tass cites him as saying.
The politician also said that the examples of Iraq and Libya show that the overthrow of authoritarian regimes in the absence of a clear plan of further actions will inevitably lead to terrible tragedies.
"I've been saying that it is impossible to defeat terrorism without an agreement between the two superpowers, taking into account all the complexities that hinder this agreement,’’ Romano Prodi said.
