Turkey’s TAEK atomic energy authority granted Russia's Rosatom a construction license to start work on the first unit of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, Anadolu agency said.
"As a result of the construction license process, an important step in the project started nearly three years ago, being completed ... it has been decided by TAEK to grant a construction license for the construction of the first unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Plant," Anadolu cited a TAEK statement.
Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend a ceremony to officially launch Akkuyu’s first unit.
Putin will make a two-day visit to Turkey on April 3-4 where he will meet Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani for a summit on Syria.
