Rüdiger von Fritsch: EU is in dialogue with South Caucasus

The South Caucasus countries are set for close interaction and cooperation with the European Union, Germany's ambassador to Russia, Rüdiger von Fritsch, told Vestnik Kavkaza.

"We are in a state of dialogue. And, apparently, the aspirations of the South Caucasus countries are for forming a closer relationship with the European Union," he said.

"This is a completely open process. At the end we will see the result," the diplomat added.

Von Fritsch also reminded that Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia are free to decide how close they will move to the European Union. "There is such an instrument of the EU as the Eastern Partnership, and such proposals are sent to all states of the South Caucasus. They can participate on a completely open base," the ambassador stressed.

"The principle is that free people take their free decision. There is no obligation. For example, this proposal was made to Armenia. Nevertheless, Armenia has decided to join the Eurasian Economic Union," Rüdiger von Fritsch said.
