Russia hopes for restoration of 'good-neighborly' relations with EU

Russia hopes for restoration of "good-neighborly" relations with the European Union and promotes security and economic cooperation, which will take into account the interests of all the nations, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Portuguese daily newspaper Publico published on Saturday, UrduPoint reports.

"We hope that wisdom and common sense will eventually win, and our relations with the European Union and its member states will be restored on the basis of genuine good-neighborliness, honesty, predictability, and openness," Lavrov said.

He emphasized that tensions between Russia and Western nations, registered over the past few years, were not something Moscow was aiming for.

"We still advocate the creation of a common space of peace in the Euro-Atlantic region and in Eurasia, equal and inseparable security, and broad economic cooperation, where interests of all the nations both those included in various integrative units, and those not included will be taken into account," Lavrov said.

He added that more and more European states were beginning to realize that confrontation with Russia was a dead-end tactics.

According to Lavrov, these states aim to pursue a "pragmatic policy" and do not want to "sacrifice the prosperity of its peoples, and the peaceful future of the pan-European house" for "mercenary interests and ambitions of extraregional players."
