Russia's Central Bank has filed a lawsuit seeking 18.2 trillion roubles ($229.36 billion) in damages from Belgian central securities depository Euroclear, a Moscow court said on Monday.

Earlier, the Russian Central Bank said it would sue the Belgium-based depository for “unlawful actions” that make it “impossible for the bank to dispose of its funds and securities.”

The sum sought at Moscow Arbitration Court would be equal to the total amount of its frozen assets as well as additional income lost from them, the regulator said. The central bank will seek to have the case heard in closed court, RBC reported.

The EU government agreed on December 12 to indefinitely freeze Russian central bank assets held in Europe.

Russia's Central Bank said that EU plans to use its assets were illegal and it reserved the right to employ all available means to protect its interests.
