Russia's Lavrov welcomes possible Trump-Kim meeting

Moscow believes that a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korea leader Kim Jong Un "is a step in the right direction", Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"For sure, we believe that this is a step in the right direction. We have heard about this agreement only today. I hope that it will be implemented. It is needed to normalize the situation around the Korean Peninsula," Lavrov told reporters while on a visit to Ethiopia.

"It should not just be a meeting, it should open up a way to resuming a fully fledged diplomatic process to find a solution to the North Korean nuclear issue on the basis of principles agreed during the six-party talks and the U.N. Security Council," Reuters cited the top diplomat as saying.

South Korean National Security Adviser Chung Eui-yong said that Trump had agreed to meet with Kim by May to achieve permanent denuclearization.
