Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow has offered the US and partners a 'two-track' approach in the fight against the terrorist group Islamic State in Syria: it includes the creation of a coalition and support for the political process.
"Everyone is interested in the initiative of our president. It suggests the formation of a coalition of those people who are already fighting on this territory and who cannot accept ISIS. Instead of arguing with each other, the common threat must be dealt with first, and then negotiate how to live in their own country," RIA Novosti quotes him as saying.
The Foreign Minister also noted that Russia "is ready", in parallel with the creation of such a coalition, "to encourage so that the very political process necessary to win the war against terrorism is not replaced by a civil war in Syria."
"Such a two-track approach: the formation of a coalition and promotion of a political process which would strengthen such coalition, because this political process should involve all Syrian forces – political ones and armed groups that are formed by patriotic military men," the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.
