Russian Foreign Ministry: Europe doesn't understand US position on Nord Stream-2 project

European countries don't understand the position of the United States on construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline, director of the European Cooperation Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrei Kelin said.

Commenting on reports about possible introduction sanctions against European countries participating in this project, diplomat stressed that this is "a very strange topic". "Europeans don't understand what they want and what will they do in Washington. They send delegations to try to sort it out, but Washington can't provide obvious and clear answers. Unfortunately, everything is extremely politicized there," he noted.

At the same time, Kelin expressed confidence Russia and the European Commission will achieve agreement on the Nord Stream-2 project this year through "normal, rational approach."

He added that America is current trying to stop this project due to the fact that it will get "less chances of selling expensive liquefied gas to Europeans."
