Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman mocks Merkel's words about sanctions principles

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova asked on Thursday to what exactly principles Europe adhered to in response to German Chancellor Angela Merkel's words about commitment to principles in terms of anti-Russian sanctions, UrduPoint reported.

Earlier in the day, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that the European Union did not impose sanctions on Russia for sanctions' sake, but did it in accordance with "principles of international law."

"Principles? Europe? Which Ones?" Zakharova wrote on her Facebook page.

The Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman recalled that when it was revealed that Merkel had been tapped by the United States, the European Union failed to take any retaliatory measures.

"And that, as it was said by the Swiss foreign minister yesterday, was an example of illegal intelligence activities, which Europe does not tolerate. And what then? What has the chancellor done 'on principle,' what sanctions have been imposed on Washington in order to explain something to the United States? How many US diplomats have been expelled?" Zakharova asked.
