Russian, Iranian Deputy Foreign Ministers discuss Syria ceasefire

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov discussed the cessation of hostilities in Syria with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement Wednesday, Sputnik International reports.

"A detailed exchange of views was held on a range of political settlement issues in Syria in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the International Syria Support Group decisions, including in the context of the task of maintaining the cessation of hostilities and ensuring the inclusiveness of the intra-Syrian negotiating process in Geneva," the ministry said.

The ministry added that Bogdanov and Amir-Abdollahian discussed a range of other issues on the regional agenda, including developments in Yemen, Libya, Iraq and the Palestinian territories.

Diplomatic efforts to restore the cessation of hostilities and return the Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee (HNC) opposition to the negotiating table in Geneva have begun afresh this month to build on political attempts to settle the 5-year civil war in Syria.

The third round of talks between Syrian government and opposition delegations mediated by UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura is expected to start later this month.
