Passengers on a ship that was making its way from Turkey to Israel's northern Haifa Port attempted to set it ablaze early Sunday off the Israeli coast, Haaretz reports.
The Israeli Navy was called in to the scene, which it said was under control.
The port's administration said two clandestine passengers who were discovered on board began rampaging, breaking items and attempting to set the vessel on fire. It added the initial alert came at around 3 A.M.
Defense officials said earlier they are looking into the assessment that the incident is of criminal nature.
According to Vesselfinder.com, the MSC Canberra container ship, which sails under a Panamanian flag, left Turkey's Mersin Port on Friday. It is scheduled to enter the port on Monday.
