The Public Opinion Fund conducted a poll among Russian citizens to find out their attitude towards the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
23% of respondents did not even know about the existence of a conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh before April 2. The remaining 67% are aware that the escalation of the conflict in early April occurred after a long truce.
Speaking about whom Moscow should support, Baku or Yerevan, 52% of respondents said that Russia should stay neutral, 6% expressed support for Armenia and 1% chose Azerbaijan.
At the same time, 40% of respondents said that Russia must do everything possible to solve the conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia, 30% believe that the country shouldn't be very active involved in this issue and 11% found it difficult to reply, Interfax reports.
The survey was conducted among 1500 people in 104 towns in 53 regions of the country on April 9-10, 2016.
Recall, on the night of April 2 all frontier positions of Azerbaijan were exposed to heavy fire from large-caliber weapons, mortars, grenade launchers and guns. In addition, Azerbaijani settlements near the front line, densely populated by civilians, were shelled.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20% of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US, are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
