Spain beats Costa Rica 7-0 at 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar

Spain’s national football team defeated the national squad of Costa Rica 7-0 in a first round group stage match at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The match was played at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

The goals were scored by Dani Olmo (11th minute), Marco Asensio (21), Ferran Torres (31, scored on a penalty kick; 54), Gavi (74), Carlos Soler (90), Alvaro Morata (90+3). Olmo’s goal was the 100th scored by the Spanish national team at the World Cup, making them just the sixth team with at least 100 goals at the world championship. Brazil is first with 229 goals, followed by Argentina (138), Italy (128) and France (124).

Halfback Gavi is the youngest player to ever play for Spain at the World Cup. The 18-year-old athlete broke the previous record held by Cesc Fabregas, who made his debut at the 2006 World Cup in a win against Ukraine (4-0) at the age of 19. Gavi is also the second youngest footballer ever to take part in the world championship (aged 18 years and 110 days). Only Brazil’s legendary striker Pele was younger at the time of his first World Cup match (aged 17 years and 249 days).

Spain and Costa Rica play in Group E alongside Germany and Japan who played earlier today with Japan winning 2-1. In the next round on November 27, Spain will play Germany and Costa Rica is scheduled to meet with the Japanese team.
