Germany as the OSCE Chairman and the OSCE Minsk Group will make every effort to resolve the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said during the joint press conference with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov at the German Society for Foreign Policy.
"My dear Elmar, previously we often called each other because of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh, and it is great that today you are here and we have an opportunity to exchange views in person. Certainly, we will not only talk about the conflict, but also about the bilateral relations, economic issues, the role of Azerbaijan as a regional factor of stability, democracy and human rights and Germany’s role as the OSCE chairman.’’
Unfortunately, we cannot ignore the topic of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and the German public cares about it. In the past weeks we have noticed a new escalation and confrontation of the conflict. Those events, victims, have shown only one thing: the status quo cannot be maintained anymore. We should return to the discussion of a political solution to the problem, but it is necessary to ensure a sustainable truce. I can only assure you that we, as the OSCE Chairman, will make every effort to calm the situation down and find the way to return to political negotiations as soon as possible,’’ Steinmeier said.
