Stoltenberg: NATO expands despite Russian protests

In recent years, NATO's "open door" policy has led to the expansion of the alliance at the expense of Montenegro and North Macedonia, despite protests from Russia, alliance secretary general Jens Stoltenberg said.

"In recent years, NATO has confirmed that its open door policy is not only words, but also actions. Including by inviting new countries: Montenegro and North Macedonia became members, that is, we have expanded in recent years with two new members, despite protests from Russia. We also support Ukraine in its striving to get closer to NATO membership", he said at a joint press conference in Brussels with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, without specifying the timing of the country's entry into the alliance.

Stoltenberg reminded that the allies agreed that Ukraine would become a member of the alliance at the 2008 Bucharest summit.
