Street in Turkey's Demre named after ambassador Karlov - media

A street in the Turkish city of Demre in the Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast was named after Russian Ambassador Andrey Karlov, Anadolu reported.

The decision to name the street leading to the Church of St. Nicholas in Demre after Karlov was made by Antalya City Council, Antalya Mayor Menderes Türel said.

According to Turel, Turkey would never forget its Russian friends and would not allow others to forget. "Andrei Karlov memorial days will take place on March 20-27, the agenda includes an exhibition, a concert, tours of St. Nicholas Church and the ancient town of Andriake. There will also be a tour of the city of Kas," he said.

Karlov’s bas-relief will be installed on the street on March 22.

Russia’s Ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov was shot dead in December 2016, by a terrorist while he was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of a photo exhibition in Ankara. He was awarded the honorary title of Hero of Russia posthumously "for displaying tenacity and courage as the Russian Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador in Turkey, and for his invaluable contribution to Russia’s foreign policy."
