Kazakhstan will switch to the Latin alphabet, but this work must be done without haste, it should be carefully thought out and carried out with the active participation of scientists who will study world experience and make balanced decisions, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.

The first meeting of the National Council for Science and Technology was held in Astana today. At the meeting, President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed the scientific community to carefully consider the issue of translating the Kazakh alphabet into Latin, the Akkorda press service reports.

"The translation of the Kazakh language into Latin script is necessary for its reform, but the problem is not in the mechanical transition from Cyrillic to Latin," RIA Novosti quotes Tokayev as saying.

Attempts in this direction were made repeatedly, but many gross mistakes were made due to a desire to solve this problem as soon as possible.

"Billboards written in Latin letters are not the Kazakh language, frankly, these are texts that are alien to the nature of our language. Therefore, this work should be carried out under the auspices of the Academy of Sciences," the President stressed.

Everything should be carefully considered, and haste must be excluded, otherwise, we will repeat previous mistakes. Scientists should carefully study the best global experience, and only on its basis make a well-thought-out decision, Tokayev added.
