Greek authorities arrested 13 yacht crew members and passengers yesterday after fireworks launched from the vessel allegedly sparked a forest fire on the Greek island of Hydra.
Firefighters got the blaze, which burned part of the island’s only pine forest in the remote area of Bisti, under control on June 22.
The Persephone yacht was reportedly rented by a group of tourists from Kazakhstan.
The people will appear before a prosecutor on June 23, the fire department said.
“The arrests come after allegations that the forest fire was sparked by fireworks launched from the yacht on Friday night,” the official said.
This year, Greece has been bracing for a difficult summer as authorities warn that strong winds and high temperatures have increased the danger.
