Traffic of all types of vehicles along the Georgian Military Road, which connects Russia with the countries of the South Caucasus, is gridlocked, Armenian deputy transport, communication and information technology minister Armen Pambukchyan warned.
"There have been problems both in the Russian and Georgian sectors of the Verkhny Lars crossing post: on the Russian side, the length of the line is 9-10 km (5 kilometers of which are trucks), and 200 trucks have gathered in the Georgian part of the road," Pambukchyan wrote on his page in Facebook.
The deputy minister also noted that work is underway to improve the situation.
"I ask you to avoid the option of coming to Armenia through this road, as you will have to stand in line for a long time," Sputnik Georgia cited Pambukchyan as saying.
Pambukchyan also notes that drivers and entrepreneurs are urging the relevant structures to solve the problem urgently, as their losses double every hour.
According to the Russian Ministry for Emergency Situations in Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, there are no signs of declining or increasing the queue, as the influx of tourists to the South Caucasus continues.
Earlier it was reported that the head of North Ossetia, Vyacheslav Bitarov, discussed the problems of Verkhny Lars with the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations Yevgeny Zinichev.
The deputy spokesman of the Department of Highways of the Georgian Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Irakli Kobidze, speaking with the correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, could not explain the reasons for such a massive summer traffic jam on the Russian-Georgian border. "We have no information about whether this traffic jam was caused by road maintenance or any natural phenomenon. Perhaps it was due to the work of the State Border Guard Service," he said.
"In general, it is now a normal summer season, we did not have any natural disasters, the road is open for normal operation." We will keep the situation under control," Irakli Kobidze assured.
The press service of the State Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in North Ossetia, speaking to Vestnik Kavkaza, also said that there are no technical reasons for delaying the traffic on the Georgian Military Road. "Currently, the road is open, the security of the participants of the movement is not in danger," the press service said. A traffic jam could have been caused by the actions of the customs service.
