Traffic on the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi Road connecting Georgia and Russia through the Caucasus mountains has resumed following the flooding of the Tergi River due to heavy rainfalls in the region, the Roads Department of Georgia announced on Monday.
The Department further noted a temporary road would be used for vehicle traffic at this stage, with the main road repaired in the meanwhile.
Late on Monday, the flooding of the river in Georgia’s north damaged an 80-metre section of the road, with the Kazbegi customs checkpoint across the border also forced to suspend its operation.
Additionally, traffic has also resumed under special mode on the Zhinvali-Barisakho-Shatili road in Georgia’s north-east. The flooded Aragvi River there had damaged the carriageway, leading to access of all types of vehicles being prohibited on several sections of the road.
