Trump says 'no political necessity' to keep Canada in NAFTA

With free trade talks between Canada, the United States and Mexico on hold for the weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump came out swinging against his northern neighbour, CTV News reports.

“I love Canada, but they’ve taken advantage of our Country for many years!” Trump tweetedSaturday morning. Trump added to that sentiment a few hours later, saying there is “no political necessity” for Canada to be included in a trade deal involving the U.S. and Mexico.

“If we don’t make a fair deal with the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out,” he tweeted. “Congress should not interfere w/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off…”

Negotiations between the three countries failed to result in an agreement by Friday, which Trump had set as a deadline for a deal. Talks will resume next week.
