Trump wins Iowa Republican caucuses

U.S. President Donald Trump has won the Iowa Republican caucuses yesterday.

Trump won the Republican contest with 97% of the vote and 8% of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press.

The results came less than a half hour after Iowa Republicans began caucusing across the state at 7 p.m. CT.

The president's first-place finish also came as the initial entrance polls from the Democratic caucuses showed a predictably close competition among the party's four top-tier candidates: Joe Biden, Pete Buttigieg, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, Politico reported.

The Iowa caucuses are biennial electoral events for members of the Democratic and Republican Parties in Iowa. In 1972, Iowa was the first state to hold its Democratic caucus, and it had the first Republican caucus four years later.
