TurkPA mission observing referendum in Azerbaijan

An international mission consisting of members of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic-Speaking Countries (TurkPA) started monitoring the referendum for amending the Constitution of Azerbaijan, TurkPA Secretary General, Jandos Asanov, said.

The mission is headed by a member of the Majilis, Nurlan Dulatbekov. The group also includes parliamentarians from Kyrgyzstan and Turkey ,Trend reports.

As many as 117 international observers – MPs from around 35 countries as well as observers from various international organizations, including the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) – have been accredited by Azerbaijan’s Central Election Commission (CEC) to observe the referendum. The total number of the observers is around 53,000.
The voting in referendum on making amendments to Azerbaijan’s constitution kicked off and will wrap up at 19:00 local time (18:00 MSK).

The draft Referendum Act envisages establishing first vice-president and vice-president positions in Azerbaijan, extending the president’s term of office from five years to seven years, given the authority to the president to dissolve the Milli Majlis and declare early presidential election, removing the age limit for presidential election, decreasing the age limit from 25 to 18 for participation in the parliamentary elections.
