Turkey requests NATO to protect its territorial integrity

Turkey has officially requested NATO to protect its territorial integrity. An emergency meeting of the Alliance for the consideration of Turkey’s request will be held tomorrow, July 28.

In its request Turkey appeals to Article 4 of the Washington agreement, in accordance with which a member of the organization can demand consultations in case of a threat to its territorial integrity, political independence or security, abc.az reports.

The official pretext for such a request was the terrorist attack in Suruc organized by the Islamic State operating in Iraq and Syria – 32 people (mostly local Kurds) were victims of the Caliphate.

As a response, the Turkish Air Force started bombing positions of the Kurdish Workers Party and Islamic State outside Turkish territory. However, Turkish President Recep Erdogan excludes the possibility of military land operations on the territory of neighbouring countries.
