Turkey's Hurriyet changes its editor-in-chief

Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper has changed its editor-in-chief, a day after strong criticism of the prominent daily by the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for a story suggesting discord between the government and the army.

In a statement to the Istanbul stock exchange, Hurriyet said it had decided to appoint veteran journalist Fikret Bila as editor and as a member of its executive board. He replaced Sedat Ergin, the paper added.

“Hürriyet will carry the flag of journalism further under the leadership of Fikret Bila,” Hürriyet Chairperson Vuslat Dogan Sabanci said, adding that “a new era is beginning.”
