Turkey suspends hundreds of navy officers connected to the Gulenist movement

Hundreds of Turkish naval officers have been suspended amid a probe after the attempted coup, the country’s defence ministry revealed on Sunday, Middle East Monitor reports.

An announcement carried on the Turkish National Defence Ministry’s official Twitter account said a total of 168 commissioned officers and 123 non-commissioned officers had been suspended from duty.

Fifteen commissioned officers and four non-commissioned officers were also dismissed.

The suspensions come amid the Turkish government’s fight against the Gulen movement – an illegal parallel state structure – following a failed coup bid on July 15.
