Iranian Ambassador to Turkey Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian Fard praised the Turkish people and government for their firm stance against an attempted coup in Turkey last month, saying that they defended democracy in their country.
“We believe that the Turkish people and government stood against the coup plotters and defended democracy by making a proper and courageous decision,” Taherian Fard said in a meeting with the members of Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK) and the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) in Ankara on Thursday.
“The Turkish people demonstrated that coup and other bullying methods have no place in our region,” Tasnim cites him as saying.
The diplomat further highlighted Iran’s support for its neighboring country, saying that from the first hours of the coup attempt, the Islamic Republic stood by the Turkish nation and backed its legitimate government.
Since the outset of a coup attempt by a group of military forces in Turkey in the early hours of July 16, Iran voiced its backing for the government of President Erdogan and dismissed any military approach to settling conflicts.
The botched putsch began late on July 15, when a faction of the Turkish military blocked Istanbul’s iconic Bosphorus Bridge and strafed the headquarters of the Turkish intelligence agency and parliament in the capital, Ankara.
