Turkmenistan increases transit through Georgia

Turkmenistan is planning to increase the volume of transit through Georgia. This was announced by Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow as he met Georgia’s President Giorgi Margvelashvili in Ashgabat today, Agenda.ge reports.

The meeting took place in the framework of Margvelashvili’s visit to Turkmenistan to attend the Global Sustainable Transport Conference there. The pair discussed the importance of large-scale projects, including the Silk Road, and the opportunities those projects offered the countries involved.

"The Silk Road creates the perspective of more intense transport cooperation between Georgia and Turmenistan,” Margvelashvili said. The Georgian President’s Administration said in a statement that Berdimuhamedow confirmed Turkmenistan was planning to increase the volume of transit through Georgia.

Margvelashvili stressed that Georgia would welcome joint business forums and Turkmen entrepreneurs and investors’ visit to Georgia. He believed such event would increase the trade and economic relations between the two states.

While in Turkmenistan President Margvelashvili will deliver a speech at the Global Sustainable Transport Conference and hold bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and President of Afghanistan later today.
