Two dead in Russia's Khanty-Mansiysk bridge collapse

The Russian Investigative Committee’s Khanty-Mansiysk regional branch has confirmed that two people died when a bridge collapsed in that western Siberian region on Monday.

"[The emergency caused] the death of two people, while five or six more were left injured. The pre-investigation inquiry has been launched. A criminal case is to be opened," TASS cited the regional investigative committee as saying.

The accident occurred at about 14:43 Moscow time in the Nefteyugansk district. The bridge was under reconstruction.

According to the regional police department, an old bridge crumbled into the Gornaya River.

"It was the old bridge that is not in operation. Repair works were underway when it broke down and two vehicles fell into the water. A new bridge is located nearby and traffic goes over it. Therefore, no restrictions have been introduced. The transport runs over the new bridge," the spokesperson said.
