UEG President Farid Gayibov visits injured UK gymnast

President of the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) Farid Gayibov and UEG General Director Lisa Worthmann have visited junior European and World Champion Isabelle Songhurst, who is in a Baku hospital, the UEG said in a message.

During the British team’s podium training session on Tuesday, Songhurst landed bad and suffered a painful injury. She was taken to a Baku hospital where she underwent surgery for an open luxation of the ankle joint. An MRI is planned in Baku and she will need to have another one back in Great Britain next week, which will show if further damage has been done to ligaments, according to the UEG.

Gayibov and Worthmann visited the champion to cheer her up. “I wanted to see personally how Isabelle is doing. I assured her that the UEG and the LOC will do everything to support her," Gayibov said.

Isabelle, who expects a second surgery in a few weeks back home in Great Britain, was pleased with the UEG visit. She is hoping to be able to return home to Great Britain within the next days. With the MRI results still missing, it is hard to make predictions, but Isabelle is hoping to be able to compete again at the World Championships in November.

The UEG wished Isabelle a speedy recovery and the best of luck at future competitions.
