UN General Assembly intends to reform Security Council

The UN General Assembly intends to go back to the process of reforming the Security Council.

It was decided last year to establish a working group in order to examine this issue.

The reform of the UN Security Council assumes its extension, first of all. It is expected that at the end of September at the 70th General Assembly session, the member states will be able to vote for future innovations.

Recall that the last reform of the UN Security Council was in 1963, when its membership was extended from 11 to 15 member countries, five of which have the right of veto as they are the permanent members.

Russia's permanent representative to the UN Security Council, Vitaly Churkin, noted that the extension of the council won’t make it more effective, Tass reports.
