UN comments on skirmish on Kyrgyz-Tajik border

The United Nation is following the Kyrgyz-Tajik border situation with concern, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Farhan Haq said.

"We have seen these reports, and we do follow this with concern.  We are also aware that there has been announcement by the two countries, by Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, that a ceasefire has now been agreed," he said.

If that is the case, that would be welcome, and we would encourage both sides to continue direct negotiation to resolve any outstanding issues in a peaceful manner," Haq added.

The situation on the border between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan escalated on April 28, after a conflict sparked between residents of the two countries’ border areas. On April 29, a firefight between Kyrgyzstan’s and Tajikistan’s military servicemen broke out. Both sides have reported injuries among their officers. According to Bishkek, Tajik military servicemen used machine guns and mortars during the firefight.
