The US Embassy in Tbilisi said that one of its employees, Mark Mitchell died in an accident near the Manglisi settlement in the Tetritskaroy municipality of Georgia.
Three people were killed, another 17 were injured after a minibus with tourists turned over in the east of Georgia after visiting one of the monasteries.
"US Embassy confirms the passing of one of its employees, Mark Mitchell, in a motor vehicle accident on May 6. Local authorities are investigating. Mark was an invaluable member of the USAID team and his absence is deeply felt. The US Embassy community expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family, to the family of the Georgian citizen who died, and to the others injured in the accident. Mark proudly served his country for the betterment of our world. Mark touched the lives of many at home and abroad, and will be remembered for his commitment to helping those most in need," the US Embassy in Tbilisi said in a statement.
"On behalf of the worldwide USAID team, I express my heartfelt condolences to the family of Mark Mitchell, an accomplished Foreign Service Officer who died in a tragic accident on Sunday in Georgia. His passion for country, for service, and for improving the lives of those in need reached communities far and wide, and touched many here at home," USAID administrator Mark Green said in a statement.
