US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir in Washington on Tuesday to discuss the regional developments.
US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said that the Secretary reiterated the importance of de-escalating the situation in the Gulf. "They also reaffirmed the need for constructive dialogue to resolve the dispute as quickly as possible," she said.
She noted that Tillerson and Adel al-Jubeir agree that there is a willingness on all sides to de-escalate the situation and work toward a lasting resolution. "We agreed on the need to focus completely on the global fight against terrorism," Nauert stressed.
"I would characterize the mood and the approach to that as being one that is hopeful, that believes that the worst is behind us," the spokesperson concluded.
On June 5, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, as well as Yemen, the interim government of Libya, the Maldives and Mauritius announced cutting diplomatic relations with Qatar over Doha’s hostile policies, interference in other Arab countries’ internal affairs and support of terrorism. Mauritania and the Comoro Islands later followed suit, while Jordan and Djibouti reduced their diplomatic representation in Qatar. However, Doha considers these actions unreasonable and rejects all accusations as groundless.
