US continues to insist on resignation of Assad, State Department says

The US continues to insist on the resignation of Syrian President Bashar Assad, the official representative Elizabeth Trudeau stated, commenting on the statement of Secretary of State John Kerry about the possibility of combining efforts with the Damascus authorities and the opposition in the name of the fight against the terrorist group Daesh.

"We are convinced that Assad has no place in Syria's future, nothing has changed. Our Secretary of State meant, as he said before, that we do not know how the transition process will develop or to what extent the presence of Assad in the short term can be reconciled with the view of opposition – and our own – that he cannot remain in power," TASS quoted her as saying.

"We cannot expect a commitment to the political process and the fight against Daesh from the opposition if they aren't assured of the resignation of Assad," Trudeau added.
