US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter told Congress today that the Pentagon was expecting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to resign voluntarily. In Carter's words, Assad was fueling extremism in the region, RIA Novosti reports.
General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, expressed confidence that the Syrian regime will try to keep its positions, so no resignation should be expected anytime soon.
