Uzbekistan’s ex-president's daughter Gulnara Karimova in custody

Uzbek Prosecutor-General's office says that the daughter of Uzbekistan’s ex-President Islam Karimov, Gulnara Karimova, has been ordered held in custody following a 2015 conviction, that she faces additional charges, and that the investigation continues.

In its statement on July 28, the Prosecutor-General's Office said that Karimova had been sentenced to five years of "restricted freedom" in 2015 after she and close associates were found guilty of extortion, embezzlement, and tax evasion.

Karimova was taken into custody as she was charged with alleged involvement in several other crimes, including financial misdeeds, document forgery, and money laundering, the lengthy statement said.

The statement marks the first time that Uzbekistan has officially given details regarding the high-profile case against Karimova, once seen as a possible successor to her father, whose death was announced in September.

Karimova has been tied to ongoing money-laundering investigations in Sweden and Switzerland and is at the center of a financial-crimes probe in Uzbekistan in which many of her associates have been jailed, RFE/RL reported.
