Vilfand: Caucasus accustomed to disaster

The main weather cataclysms in the North Caucasus are tropical storms, thunderstorms, hail, wind storms, and others. ‘‘In fact, it is natural for this region due to its geographical characteristics,’’ the director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia Roman Vilfand said in an interview with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza.

‘‘Traditionally, the North Caucasus is a region with a high probability of natural disasters. The fact that the hottest weather is in the south of the European part of Russia. Therefore, if the temperature is very high, the energy of the atmosphere will reach its maximum. Taking into account the complex airbrushing of North Caucasus, it creates a fast effect of convection, which leads to a rapid cloud formation and heavy precipitation, hail, thunderstorms and formation of intensification of wind," he explained.

According to Vilfand, as a result, tropical storms are frequent in this region. ‘‘There is a lot of precipitation in the North Caucasus and in Krasnodar Territory. Really much. Sometimes there were real tropical storms, more than 100 mm fell during 6 hours. At that time, to quickly create conditions for the explosive convection, dynamic conditions, and airbrush that helped this process,’’ the head of the Hydrometeorological Center said.

"This is traditionally a dangerous region in comparison with other regions of our country,’’ he underlined.

‘‘Now, when the summer is over, weather conditions in the North Caucasus Federal District are improving. But it's too early to relax, as there is some probability of natural disasters emergencies related to weather,’’ Vilfand said. "The situation has calmed down, although the most dangerous time in the North Caucasus lasts until mid-November, because warmth from the Black Sea may lead to the formation of convection. The situation is much calmer in winter due to horizontal streams instead of vertical ones,’’ he explained.

"Speaking about the current weather, now the temperature in the North Caucasus and southern Krasnodar Territory is high, but it is expected that tomorrow it will decrease. So night temperatures will be in the range of 5-10 degrees, and heat is not expected: 15-18 °C is the maximum temperature. Thunderstorms are expected in some republics of North Caucasus in the middle and the second half of the week," Roman Vilfand forecast.
