Vitaly Naumkin: Russia and Turkey should not quarrel where they can join forces

Despite the presence of many similar interests, Russia and Turkey have differences in approaches, allies, enemies and objectives, the scientific director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, Vitaly Naumkin, stated at the third plenary session 'Strategic interests and prospects of cooperation between Russia and Turkey in solving regional problems' at the international conference 'Russia and Turkey: strengthening of multifaceted cooperation'.

"Our interests are expanding, there are more of them, but there are serious obstacles on the path of expansion. First of all, there is the provision of security. Two events took place today in the regional situation, they dramatically change it: there is the deal on Iran's nuclear program and the operation of the Russian Federation on strikes against terrorists. I always object when it is being called intervention, because we are doing it at the request of the Syrian leadership, we assist Damascus. I emphasize that in such matters, where there is disagreement between the two countries, in order to establish mutual understanding it is necessary to rely on the expert community," Naumkin stressed.

Vitaly Naumkin expressed confidence that today Russia and Turkey have a common goal – fighting Islamic State.
