What will Tusk discuss in Georgia?

Today it became known that on Monday the head of the European Council Donald Tusk will visit Georgia. This was reported to the presidential administration of republic.

"At the invitation of the President of Georgia President of the European Council Donald Tusk will arrive in Georgia on July 20 on a two-day visit," EC officials said.

Initially, Donald Tusk's visit was scheduled for July 14-15, but it had to be postponed because of the protracted negotiations on the issue of Greece.

Vestnik Kavkaza asked Georgian experts what this visit by the head of the Council of Europe means for the country and what the possible agenda of the talks will be during his meetings with the authorities of the republic.

As the head of the Center for European Studies Kaha Gogolashvili noted in an interview with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, the main theme of the upcoming talks in Tbilisi will be the European integration of Georgia. "It's a planned visit. Georgia is preparing to obtain a visa-free regime, which means that at the end of August the country should give the European Commission a report on the implementation of the plan on preparation for the visa regime, and one of the points of the forthcoming visit will probably be the support of the chairman of the Council of Europe on granting a visa-free regime to Georgia. And the other theme is, of course, ratification, further ratification by the other member countries of the Association Agreement. Of course, probably support for the security of the country, its territorial integrity and independence, since Georgia needs more consolidation, more support for the humanitarian situation," the head of the Center for European Studies supposes.

The head of the Center for Security Studies and International Relations, Nika Chitadze, noted that "the fact that Donald Tusk will arrive in Georgia in two days, testifies, of course, that he is interested in this visit." "And accordingly, the EU is also interested in development of relations with Georgia. I think that this meeting will also address issues related to the movement of the occupation line into the territory of Georgia," the expert stressed.

A member of the 'Expert Club of Georgia', Vakhtang Maisaya, also thinks that the main theme of the visit of Donald Tusk to Tbilisi will be the European integration of the country. "I think that the issue of further continuation of this process will be discussed, as well as the current political and economic conditions for its development, as well as the risks that have arisen in connection with the conduction of such a policy by Georgia," he noted.
