Will weather spare Moscow and North Caucasus?

Will weather spare Moscow and North Caucasus?

Over the past few days several tropical storms caused showers, thunderstorms and strong wind in Moscow. The elements were especially raging on July 13 when a number of streets were flooded, 300 trees were uprooted by wind, due to which 22 cars were damaged. 37% of the monthly norm of precipitation fell per one evening in some areas.

In May and June, the North Caucasus republics have not been spared by the elements. Storms, heavy rains, hurricane winds and hail have caused serious damage to agriculture, as well as infrastructure in the region.

The press service of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia, speaking with a correspondent of Vestnik Kavkaza, said that, in fact, there was an unusual situation in Moscow. "Sedentary cyclone centered over the southeastern Europe last week. It migrated from the Black Sea to the north, Ukraine and our Central Federal District. An anticyclone was located in the north. This caused such unstable weather in Moscow and the Moscow region. The flows from the south brought bland and humid air, therefore, there were showers and thunderstorms in the areas of atmospheric fronts," the department's press service explained.

A spokesperson of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Russia stressed that the peak of this phenomenon is over. "Last night 30-40 mm of precipitation fell. The air was humid, so it rained, it was accompanied by thunderstorms and hail locally with wind gusting up to 15 m/s in Moscow and the region. The maximum amount of rain that fell in the day was 12 mm, in the night - 8 mm," the meteorological service noted, adding that the precipitation was very close to normal during the last days, which is 95 mm in July.

"22-24 degrees is the maximum temperature for today in the capital city, 19-24 degrees - in the region, southern wind will have speeds of up to  5-10 m/s. Tomorrow's forecast is also ready: intermittent rain is expected, air temperature will hit 23-25 degrees during the day and 12-14 degrees at night in Moscow, at the same time 20-25 degrees during the day and 9-14 degrees during the night in the Moscow region. The northern wind will have speeds of 5-10 m/s," the representative of the weather service said.

The department pointed out that the weather in the Russian capital does not go beyond the norm yet. "There is nothing unusual about weather. July 2008 was the wettest one on record, the precipitation exceeded the norm by 2 times. To date, 88 mm of precipitation fell in July in Moscow,  with an average of 95 mm. With regard to the air temperature, then tomorrow it will be 23-25 degrees during the day and 12-14 degrees during the night, which corresponds to our climate. On Saturday the temperature in Moscow will rise to 14-16 degrees during the night and 24-26 degrees during the day," the spokesperson noted.

Speaking of the North Caucasus, the department explained that in general, the climate of this region assumes the high instability of the weather in the first half of summer. "The air is warmed slowly, it is influenced by the sea and the mountains, so, in principle, it is the normal thing. Though this time, indeed, there were blocking elements, when the anticyclone was located in the north and a cyclone in the south," the department explained.

"For example, the precipitation exceeded the norm by 2-4 times in May in the North Caucasus. At the same time, on the contrary, the hydration was insufficient in some places. June was also characterized by unstable weather, the monthly norm of precipitation was also exceeded. The period of unstable weather has lasted so long due to the unusual distribution of atmospheric waves, when there were anticyclones in the north of European Russia and cyclones in the south," the weather service said.

The press service of the Kabardino-Balkarian Regional Emergency Center told Vestnik Kavkaza that in June and July there was "a complex of adverse weather events in the form of torrential rains resulting in mudflows in the country. "The roads in the Cherek district were closed in several places as a result of a mudflow. Two private houses were completely demolished by mudflows in the village of Karasu," the spokesperson said.
