World Chess Olympiad Starts In Baku

The 42nd World Chess Olympiad started several minutes ago in Baku. The opening ceremony held at the National gymnastics arena will last for about an hour and the tournament itself will be held at the Baku Crystal Hall Sports and Concert Complex that was built four years ago.

The opening ceremony of the 42nd World Chess Opympiad in Baku is attended by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva. Before that, the head of Azerbaijan, met with members of the national team, who represent the country of Azerbaijan at the tournament.

176 countries have registered to participate in the Olympiad. The tournament will be played over four boards per round in a Swiss System format in 11 rounds. A victory will bring two points, a draw - one and a loss - zero. Time control is 90 minutes per 40 moves and after that 30 minutes till game end with a 30 second increment per move.

The 42th World Chess Olympiad in Baku will become a record-breaking tournament: it is expected that some 2,500 players, coaches and officials will participate in this memorable event. In addition, the tournament will become the largest sporting event.
