Armenian National Book Fund may be closed down

The National Book Fund of Armenia may be closed down, director of the fund Ovanes Bekmezyan said, News Armenia reports.

The fund is located in the Drama Theater named after Kaplanyan. There is no heating, which is vital for the books.

Bekmezyan said that the fund possesses over a million documents published since 1920. The government provides $1.576 million annually for maintenance but it is not enough.

Armenia will mark the 500th anniversary of book-printing. Many foreign guests and international organizations will visit the country. “It is embarrassing to show the fun in such condition”, Bekmezyan said.

The National Book Fund of Armenia has collected a copy of each publication since 1920.
